Frequency Hopping is sequential change of carrier frequency on the radio link between BS and MS.

1)Frequency Hopping  is  be used to improve the quality of the network.

2)Frequency Hopping  is also used to increase the capacity of the Network thereby reducing the number of sites required for CAPACITY.

The way it works

1)Every  burst is transmitted on a different  different frequency
2)Both mobile and base station follow the same hopping sequence.

Hopping Parameters
1)Mobile Allocation (MA): Set of frequencies the mobile is allowed to hop over. MA will receives 0-63  frequencies at the same time . Eg:- If the operator has frequencies from 1 -32, then he can use 1-15 for BCCH and 17-32 for hopping ( MA).
2)Hopping Sequence Number (HSN): Determines the hopping order used in the cell. It  arrange the 64 types of frequency in the order whatever receive from MA.
3)Mobile Allocation Index Offset (MAIO): Determines inside the hopping sequence ,in which  frequency the mobile starts to transmit on.
